MagSafe vs Magnetic Car Mounts: iPhone and Android Compatibility

Magnetic car mounts are the fastest, most satisfying way to hold a phone — snap it on, grab it off, no arms or clamps. But “magnetic” means slightly different things for iPhone and Android, so here's exactly what works with what.

MagSafe iPhones (iPhone 12 and later)

Every iPhone from the iPhone 12 onward has a built-in ring of magnets called MagSafe. It snaps directly onto any magnetic car mount — no accessory needed — and aligns itself automatically. The hold is strong enough for rough roads as long as the mount's magnets are up to the job.

With a case? A genuine MagSafe case passes the magnets straight through. A thick non-MagSafe case can weaken the hold — either switch to a MagSafe-compatible case or add a magnetic disc on top.

Older iPhones (iPhone 11 and earlier)

No built-in magnets, so you add a thin magnetic disc to the back of the phone or case. Once it's on, it behaves just like MagSafe on the mount.

Android phones (Samsung, Google, Oppo, etc.)

Very few Android phones have built-in magnets, so the standard solution is a magnetic disc stuck to the phone or case. With the Mounera GripLock that disc is included: peel it, centre it (away from the wireless-charging coil) and stick it down, and you have a MagSafe-style snap-on for any Android.

Does a magnetic mount affect my phone?

No. Magnets won't harm your phone's storage, screen or battery. The only thing to keep clear is the wireless-charging area — centre the disc so it doesn't sit over the coil, and wireless charging still works.

Will it hold a big phone?

Yes, provided the magnets are strong. Pro Max and Ultra-class phones are heavy, so a weak novelty magnet will sag on corners. Choose a mount rated for full-size phones. We compare holding strength across mount types in our suction vs adhesive vs vent guide.

Getting the strongest hold

  • Use a MagSafe case for iPhone, or a quality magnetic disc for everything else.
  • Keep the magnet surface clean — see maintenance tips.
  • Pair the magnet with a solid base so the whole mount, not just the phone, stays put — that's where a strong vacuum base matters.

The simple answer

Whatever phone you own, a magnetic mount with a strong base covers you. The Mounera GripLock snaps straight onto MagSafe iPhones, and works with any Android phone using the included magnetic disc.
