A vacuum phone mount is only as good as its installation. Get the surface and the seal right and it will hold for months without a wobble; rush it and you'll be re-sticking it every week. Here's how to do it once, properly.
Before you start
- Clean the mounting surface — the GripLock comes with a cleaning wipe for exactly this (or use isopropyl alcohol) — and let it dry.
- Choose a smooth, flat, non-porous spot — windscreen glass or a glossy dash panel is ideal.
- Make sure the spot keeps your view of the road clear. We cover placement and legality in windscreen vs dashboard.
Step 1: Prep the surface
Dust and oil are the enemy of any seal. Wipe the exact spot where the base will sit with the included cleaning wipe, then let it fully dry. On a windscreen, clean the inside of the glass — it's usually filmier than it looks.
Step 2: Position the base
Hold the mount where you want it and check the angle before committing. You want the phone to sit within easy reach and glance-distance, without blocking your line of sight.
Step 3: Press, then lock
Press the base down firmly to push the air out from under the seal, then engage the lock lever fully. With a vacuum mount you should feel it draw down and grip. If the lever won't stay down, the surface isn't smooth enough — move to glass or add a base disc.
Step 4: Fit your phone
Snap a MagSafe iPhone straight onto the magnetic head. For any other phone, stick the included magnetic disc to your case or phone back first, then snap it on. Rotate to portrait or landscape for GPS. See MagSafe vs magnetic for compatibility.
Step 5: Test before you drive
Give the phone a firm wiggle. It should not shift. If it does, remove, re-clean, and re-seal — two minutes now saves a dropped phone later.
Troubleshooting a weak seal
- Textured dash? Use an adhesive base disc to create a smooth surface.
- Won't hold in heat? That's an adhesive-mount problem, not a vacuum one — see the heat guide.
- Grip fading over time? Clean the seal — maintenance tips here.
Fit it once with the right mount
The Mounera GripLock is designed for exactly this: press, twist, locked — in about three seconds — on any smooth surface, with a one-twist release when you want to move it.
