Why grip fades over time
Vacuum seals and magnetic rings don't usually wear out mechanically. They lose grip because a fine film of dust, skin oil and dashboard-shine product builds up on the contact surface, breaking the seal or padding the magnet. Clean it off and full grip comes straight back.
Cleaning the vacuum seal
- Twist the mount off the surface.
- Wipe the rubber seal with a cloth and a little isopropyl alcohol — avoid oily household sprays, which leave residue.
- Let it dry completely. A damp seal grips poorly.
- Clean the mounting surface too, then press and lock. You should feel it draw down firmly.
Do this monthly, or any time the grip feels softer than usual — it's the single most effective fix for a mount that's started slipping.
Looking after the magnetic hold
- Wipe the magnetic head and your phone's ring or MagSafe surface with a dry cloth to clear dust and lint.
